2012 marks X-TRA's 15th Year.

It's a time to celebrate!

It is also time to announce this year's matching grant challenge fundraiser and

ask that you remember us in your end-of-year giving.

Two generous benefactors have again combined forces with an offer to match, dollar for dollar, every contribution made on behalf of X-TRA between now and December 31, 2011, up to a total of $20,000.

Why you? Because you appreciate X-TRA as an independent, artist-run publication, and the voice it gives to intelligent art writing in Los Angeles. Your twenty bucks means $40 for X-TRA. Your $100 is $200. $500 is $1000! No gift is too small.

What we've been up to:
X-TRA is more than Los Angeles' longest running art journal. While the magazine supports the art community and contributes to the record of contemporary art, we also host events that expand on issues raised on our pages. We hosted film screenings of rare works by Gary Beydler and Charles Ludlam; artist and writer conversations with Brandon LaBelle with Benjamin Lord, Zoe Crosher with Jenée Misraje, and our 1 IMAGE 1 MINUTE event last January, which brought 50 artists, writers, and curators together on stage for a sold-out evening.

 

Exciting X-TRA events for the coming year include a restaging of Robert Wilhite's Chinese Cocktail on January 24, as part of the Getty Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival, at Barnsdall Gallery Theatre (reserve tickets now!); a special performance based on Eugenia P. Butler's Kitchen Table project during the College Art Association Conference; and a big benefit party in the Spring.

 

Coming up in 2012:
And this year we plan to do more than just party to celebrate X-TRA's 15th anniversary. We are investing in X-TRA's future with a thorough redesign of both the publication and our website, slated to launch in September 2012. In addition, X-TRA's entire back catalogue will be digitized and made available for the first time.

 

We're also producing a new Artist Edition of bandanas, featuring Pae White, Harry Gamboa Jr., Jesse Willenbring, Kate Costello and Kay Rosen. And, we're going to offer our 1999 portfolio Pasadena Adjacent, featuring prints from LA artists Andrea Bowers, David Bunn, Laura Owens, Liz Larner, Sam Durant, Marnie Weber, and more.

 

All of these exciting endeavors cost money, and the majority of X-TRA's funding comes through grants and contributions from friends like you. In these uncertain times, when government and foundation support is far less consistent than it once was, we need your help more than ever.

 

Contribute with confidence. With our tight budget (and superb volunteer editorial team!), each dollar makes a real difference. Over 85% of our budget goes toward the actual production and distribution of X-TRA.
