X-TRA Shifting to Biannual Publishing Schedule

Dear Reader,

We write to share the news that X-TRA is shifting from a quarterly to a biannual publication. For volume 23, we will publish two print issues–one in Fall/Winter 2020 (shipping in the next few weeks) and one in Spring/Summer 2021. At the same time, X-TRA Online will continue to publish a panoply of web-specific content, including interviews, audio recordings, columns, and videos.

X-TRA’s mission is to sustain a vibrant critical discourse about contemporary art and foster inclusive networks and expansive thinking. Our print journal, website, and public events create forums for the diverse voices of artists and writers. We have developed this more sustainable publication model–split between print and online–in order to make the most of our resources and reach the widest possible audience. Our editorial board is a volunteer-driven, self-governing collective of accomplished artists, curators, and writers. The biannual print model will make the editorial workload more manageable while maintaining our high editorial standards. This shift also enables us to increase our writer fees for print and online by more than 25%.

As of November 20, the standard yearly subscription (“X-TRA Reader”) will include two issues by mail, and the price will remain $40/year. The cover price of individual copies will increase to $20/issue. All current subscribers will receive the total number of issues for which they are subscribed. For example, if you have received one of four issues in your subscription, you will still receive three more, spread over two volumes (two years).

Be on the lookout for the new issue, X-TRA vol. 23 no. 1 (Fall/Winter 2020) shipping before the end of the month!

Our dedicated community of subscribers and patrons sustains critical art writing in Los Angeles and beyond. We are deeply grateful to you for continuing to lift us up.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us at editors @ x-traonline.org if you have any questions about your subscription, or this shift in our schedule.

Thank you, and take care,
X
